First Edition Recap
Theme: COVID-19 Prediction
Looking Back at an Inspiring Beginning
The inaugural edition of the MAEPiMS Challenge (Mathematical Modelling | Epidemiology | Machine Learning | Social Indicators) brought together some of Nigeria’s brightest minds to tackle one of the most pressing global challenges of our time—predicting the spread and impact of COVID-19.
The challenge provided a platform for students, researchers, and innovators across Nigeria to apply data science, mathematical modelling, and epidemiological techniques to generate insights that could support informed decision-making and public health interventions.
Objectives
Participants were tasked with developing predictive models capable of:
- Forecasting COVID-19 infection trends and case numbers.
- Analysing transmission patterns using epidemiological models.
- Integrating machine learning techniques to improve prediction accuracy.
- Providing data-driven recommendations that could aid policymakers and healthcare stakeholders.
The challenge encouraged innovative thinking, analytical excellence, and practical applications of mathematics and data science in addressing real-world problems.
Top 4 from the first edition
